Ava DuVernay is an American filmmaker, writer, and producer who began her career in film publicity before directing award-winning independent and mainstream projects. She founded the distribution and arts collective ARRAY in 2010, won the U.S. Dramatic Directing Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for Middle of Nowhere, and later directed acclaimed works including Selma, the documentary 13th, and the limited series When They See Us.
