A nine-piece ensemble created for recording sessions in 1949–1950 whose tracks were compiled and released by Capitol Records in 1957 as Birth of the Cool. The group's unusual instrumentation and tightly scored arrangements had a major influence on small-group jazz orchestration and subsequent development of the cool jazz idiom. Those recordings are widely regarded as a landmark in the evolution of post?bebop jazz.
