Formed by brothers Aaron and Lawrence Shaw, Black Nile is a duo that has been playing music together for most of their lives, bringing forth a telepathic dynamic that translates heavily into their jazz-tinged music and live performances. Born and raised in Ladera Heights, the Shaw brothers were introduced to music at an early age by their father, who was a pianist. The brothers became inspired to take music lessons, and eventually attended high school at the prestigious Los Angeles County High School for The Arts. This led to Aaron playing the saxophone, flute, SP-404, piano, and drums, and Lawrence playing the bass, piano, guitar, drums. While in high school the brothers played all over LA with their friends at various jazz gigs with some of the best musicians in the city. Alpha Pup Records noticed their talent and signed them to their first recording contract, where they recorded their first LP Ancient Futurism. Identified as part of the next wave of young talented musicians emerging from LA as part of the city’s Jazz Renaissance, Black Nile is a name to stay on the lookout for.
