Total Shutdown played their first gig on February 14, 2000; the five-piece lineup included vocalist Bob Linder, saxophonist Matt Hartman, bassist Nate Denver, guitarist Paul Costuros, and drummer Phillipe Nguyen. They released a self-titled album on Tigerbeat6 in 2003 after earlier limited singles and a one-sided 12" ("Long in the Making") in 2002, and received attention from critics including placement on Byron Coley’s Village Voice top ten singles and praise from Sonic Youth.
