Wynton Learson Marsalis (born October 18, 1961) is an American trumpeter, composer, and educator who helped found Jazz at Lincoln Center and serves as its long-time artistic director. He has won nine Grammy Awards and in 1997 became the first jazz composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his oratorio Blood on the Fields. Marsalis has led major ensembles (including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra) since the 1980s and is active as a soloist, bandleader, and composer in both classical and jazz contexts.
