In her fever dreams, she relives her time at Yale during the early years of coeducation, where she first fought the many men who refused to take women artists seriously. Ana's filmmaking journey takes her from the high-stakes New York art scene to the gritty blues clubs of Memphis. Along the way, she navigates toxic relationships and "mentors" who try to control her talent. Ana returns to Manhattan to finish her film, The Cyborg Goddess, and stop playing it safe. Confronting the ghosts of her past, she determines to finally stop letting others define her and claim her own voice. Portrait of an Artist as a Young Woman is a powerful #MeToo story from a different era, exposing the dark side of sexual liberation and the systems designed to keep women small and under control. Alexis Krasilovsky is a novelist, Pushcart Prize-nominated poet, award-winning filmmaker, and Professor Emerita at California State University, Northridge. Her forthcoming novel, Portrait of an Artist as a Young Woman (City Point Press; distributed by Simon & Schuster), fictionalizes her experiences as a member of Yale’s first undergraduate class of women and the making of her first film, End of the Art World, featuring Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns. The film was recently restored with support from the National Film Preservation Foundation. Her books include the poetry collection Watermelon Linguistics: New and Selected Poems, Great Adaptations: Screenwriting and Global Storytelling, and Women Behind the Camera. Retrospectives of her film and video work have been presented at the Whitney Museum and venues around the world, and she received a lifetime achievement award from the Gdańsk DocFilm Festival. She lives in Los Angeles.
